Identity
7th grade students were interpreting the painting "Self portrait with Dr. Juan Farill," by Frida Kahlo, and exploring how she expressed her identity in her art.
Students were also studying about people immigrating to the New World in their Social Studies and reading stories on the same theme.
Our discussion led to how part of our identity is connected to a group.
Also how our clothing and personal objects express our identity.
Students started project by choosing one of four template stock figures.
They then designed the background using their initials, and colored in the figure expressively.
Next they laid a transparency on they're drawing and added with Sharpie markers and china pencils their facial features, hair, cloths, and objects to their self-portrait.
They then combined the two parts to complete their artwork.
The artwork is held together with black construction paper frame, not shown.
