Student Comic Page
Two of my schools Volta, a Chicago Public School, and San Miguel a Chicago Catholic Middle School had art programs on indigenous people of the Americas.
The last 7sessions they both examined the indigenous Mayan Culture from the past to the present.
For their project they took inspiration from the Ancient Mexican Mayan Culture’s Codex. There is only 8 Mayan Codices left. These are pages 56 and 57 of what is now known as the Madrid Codex. The Spaniards destroyed all the other books they had made.
The Smash Bros. also inspired the students when the Smash Bros. where inspired to created all of the Pokémon characters in the style of the Ancient Mayans as drawn in the ancient Codices. All of the students had the same image of Pikachu in the center of the page.
Students then had to create a story, plan out a sketch around their idea, redraw their sketch onto the finished page, then add color and black marker lines to completed comic page. Students had 6 sessions to create comic page.
Work is from both schools, and grouped around certain ideas or layout styles.
There were so many great comic pages that I just had to call it quits at 68 pages.
Hope you enjoy them.
