Students first interpreted Romare Bearden’s artwork The Block and explored how the artist communicated the theme community.
Next sessions students interpreted the work of Chicago artist Bernard Williams.
Students scanned and analyzed how Mr. Williams used silhouette symbols to express his ideas. They then designed silhouette symbols to express our theme.
For our next sessions we analyzed artwork made by the Nedebele women of South Africa painted pattern designs for their homes and walls. This gave students inspiration for their pattern design ideas to go with their silhouette symbols for their community murals.
Students worked in 2 teams to plan and create murals. School’s art teacher Kathryn Eardley and I worked with the two teams.
