Urban Gateways in-school mural planned, designed, and created by 3rd, 4th, and 8th graders.
Students first scanned and analyzed different murals through history, and than they concentrated on Romare Bearden’s artwork The Block. Students explored how artists have communicated the theme of community.
Students planned murals by first designing their own mural around theme. Next they took ideas from other students and worked in teams of two to plan a new deign. Then they redesigned murals again working in small groups evaluating and refining their mural design as they went. Students from each classroom then voted for the best 2 design plans from their classroom, and principal picked the four best designs for the mural.
All students’ primed walls, added grid, drew, and painted all the sections of the mural.
Mural was planned and painted over 16 in-school sessions.
